Cletrics vs CloudZero

CloudZero is powerful. But it's powered by yesterday's data.

Most tools rely on billing APIs that lag by 24 hours to 30 days. Cletrics delivers 1-minute real-time alerting to stop spikes before they become bills.

The core difference

CloudZero is a forensic reporting tool for historical bills. Cletrics is a real-time observability engine. One shows you what you spent last week; the other shows you what you are spending right now.

Data source comparison: CloudZero relies on AWS Cost and Usage Reports (CUR), which often lag by 24 hours to a full month. Cletrics polls live cloud APIs every 60 seconds.

Why teams switch from CloudZero to Cletrics

8–48h

Data lag you can't act on

CloudZero ingests Cost and Usage Reports. Those files are generated by AWS up to 48 hours after spend occurs. Cletrics polls live APIs every 60 seconds.

$15K+

Enterprise pricing floors

CloudZero starts at $15,000+/year with custom enterprise quotes. Cletrics offers free ELv2 self-hosting and Cletrics Cloud at 1% of monitored spend, backed by managed operations and support.

March 2026

The $82k Gemini Breach

Vantage relies on 24h billing reports. In the March 2026 Gemini breach, compromised keys generated $82,314 in spend before the 12-hour delayed Vantage alert fired. Cletrics interdicts these high-velocity attacks in under 60 seconds.

Weekend Gap

72-Hour Blind Spot

Vantage waits for the CUR to stabilize over the weekend. For a $10k/day account, this 72-hour lag results in $30k of unrecoverable spend. Cletrics provides 1-minute real-time cost visibility to kill weekend billing bombs.

3 Days

Time-to-value gap

CloudZero implementations involve tagging strategy sessions and professional services. Cletrics: connect your IAM, set alert thresholds, live in 10 minutes.

How Cletrics is architecturally different from CloudZero

CloudZero is a business-intelligence layer built on top of batch billing exports. It ingests AWS Cost and Usage Reports (files generated by AWS on an 8–48 hour cycle), normalizes them, and presents them in a cost allocation UI. That architecture makes CloudZero powerful for FinOps reporting, showback, and budget governance. It does not make it capable of real-time cost observability.

Cletrics is built on a fundamentally different data pipeline. Instead of waiting for CUR files, Cletrics polls live cloud provider cost APIs (the AWS Cost Explorer API, Azure Consumption API, and GCP Cloud Billing API) every 60 seconds. These APIs reflect spend within minutes of it occurring. The result is a live cost state, not a billing snapshot: every dashboard, every alert threshold, and every anomaly baseline in Cletrics is operating on data that was fresh one minute ago.

This is not a UI difference. It is an architectural difference in where data originates and how old it is when it reaches you.

Specific problems Cletrics solves that CloudZero doesn't

Bill shock from overnight autoscaling

An EC2 Auto Scaling group misfires at 2 AM. By the time CloudZero's next CUR file arrives, hours of excess instances have already run. Cletrics fires an alert at 2:01 AM, while the on-call engineer can still terminate the group and cap the damage.

Incident-cost correlation gap

Cloud cost spikes almost always correspond to an infrastructure event: a deployment, a config error, a runaway job. CloudZero shows you cost allocation history. Cletrics shows you the spike as it happens, so your team can correlate cost anomalies with the infrastructure incident that caused them in real time.

Tagging drift and silent cost accumulation

Untagged resources silently accumulate cost every hour. CloudZero surfaces untagged spend after the billing cycle closes. Cletrics surfaces it in real time and can alert the team that provisioned the resource before the drift compounds.

MSP blind spots across client accounts

If you manage multi-tenant cloud environments, you need per-client visibility the moment a client's workload spikes, not after their monthly invoice is generated. CloudZero has no white-label client-level alerting tier. Cletrics ships MSP mode as a standard feature: per-client dashboards, thresholds, and alert channels, all under your brand.

Pricing opacity for SMBs

CloudZero does not publish pricing. Every engagement starts with a custom quote, typically $15,000–$60,000+ annually. For teams that haven't yet scaled into enterprise FinOps programs, that is a barrier before value is proven. Cletrics is source-available under ELv2, with free self-hosting and hosted pricing at 1% of monitored spend.

Who benefits from switching

  • Engineering teams: Get actionable cost alerts in the same incident response window as infrastructure alerts. Before the overage is committed to the bill.
  • FinOps and finance: See accurate current spend, not yesterday's projections. Forecasts are based on real-time run rate, not billing cycle extrapolation.
  • MSPs and agencies: Deliver proactive cost governance to clients under your brand, with per-client alert thresholds and white-label dashboards, not reactive monthly reports.
  • Startup and growth teams: Get enterprise-grade cost observability from day one. Self-serve, 10-minute setup, no FinOps team or implementation consultant required.

Frequently asked questions about Cletrics vs CloudZero

Can Cletrics import our existing CloudZero tagging strategy?

Yes. Cletrics reads your existing AWS resource tags, Azure resource groups, and GCP labels natively. No migration required. Your cost allocation structure carries over automatically.

We rely on CloudZero's business mapping. Does Cletrics have something similar?

Cletrics supports team, environment, and service-level cost attribution via tags and Kubernetes namespaces. If you have a complex custom hierarchy built in CloudZero, book a demo and we'll walk through the migration path.

How is the pricing different?

CloudZero requires a custom enterprise quote. Typically $15,000–$60,000/year depending on cloud spend. Cletrics offers free ELv2 self-hosting (github.com/Cletrics/Cletrics) and Cletrics Cloud at 1% of monitored spend.

Does Cletrics replace CloudZero's showback reports?

Cletrics provides per-team dashboards, namespace-level chargeback, and exportable cost reports. For MSPs, white-label per-client dashboards are included. Showback and chargeback use cases are fully covered.
